Consultant- Optical Network Engineering

Job ID: 36369

Job Location: Tokyo, Japan

Function: Chief Operations Office

Sub Function: Engineering

Job Level: S2 Core

Employment Type: Full Time

Why we need this role

We are seeking Optical Network Consultant in the network planning team who will ensure Colt’s optical network has the right capacity and capability in the right locations at the right time, supporting strategic planning, proactive capacity management, forecasting, and on-time service deliver. This role goes beyond hands‑on engineering and also focuses on sales & customer‑facing engagement, solution guidance, and technical leadership for the local engineering team.

What you will do

Support Sales and Service Delivery at pre‑sales and delivery stages for capacity checks, feasibility assessments, and technical inputs.

Act as the primary technical consultant for Sale and Service Delivery on optical network solutions, capacity strategy, and delivery feasibility.

Lead customer and partner discussions on optical architecture- handoff options, resilience, capacity evolution, and future‑ready designs.

Monitor optical network utilization, performance trends, and capacity thresholds to identify bottlenecks early and avoid service delivery impact.

Forecast demand using historical trends, run‑rate data, and sales pipeline visibility to plan proactive capacity builds.

Trigger proactive and reactive capacity expansions, ensuring the right balance between justified investment and delivery timelines.

Coordinate with Supply Chain, Vendors, Implementation and Field teams to secure timely delivery of fibre, electronics, site infra, and licences.

Identify optimisation opportunities to recover unused capacity, reduce costs, and improve network efficiency.

Maintain planning rules, design inputs, and deployment standards for Ciena and Nokia optical platforms.

Track end‑to‑end capacity delivery plans, risks, dependencies, and ensure commitments to the business are met on time.

Define and maintain KPIs, dashboards, and reporting to measure performance, improvements, and alignment with business objectives.

What we're looking for

Must haves:

  • Business level Japanese and English skill
  • Strong senior‑level expertise in DWDM/OTN technologies (Ciena, Nokia, Fujitsu, ADTRAN or equivalent).
  • Proven experience engaging directly with customers, sales teams, and service delivery in a technical advisory role.
  • Deep conceptual understanding of optical network architecture, ROADM‑based systems, transponders, and photonic design principles.
  • Experience guiding network planning and design decisions, including capacity strategy, resilience models, and technology choices.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, able to influence Sales, Service Delivery, Engineering, Architecture, and Leadership.
  • Ability to balance technical depth with clear, business‑focused communication.
  • Experience driving optimisation initiatives such as capacity reuse, license optimisation, and asset recovery.
  • Confidence operating as a senior individual contributor, providing direction without line‑management responsibility.
  • Experience in driving improvements through technology innovation, network optimization, and process enhancement.
  • Ability to support large expansion or transformation projects (overlays, subsea upgrades, proactive builds, node exits, regulatory projects).

Might haves:

  • Exposure to automation and digitalisation of planning processes, including AI‑driven forecasting and automated monitoring.
  • Experience improving end‑to‑end capacity delivery processes, reducing lead times, defining SLAs, and standardising deployment guidelines.
  • Knowledge of designing customer‑specific optical solutions and bespoke delivery requirements.
  • Experience with network functional testing, benchmarking, failure reproduction, and issue validation.
  • Technical /Conceptual knowledge of SDN Orchestrator platforms such as for service provisioning over multivendor optical environments.
