Colt provides network, voice and data centre services to thousands of businesses around the world, allowing them to focus on delivering their business goals instead of the underlying infrastructure.
Why we need this role
We are seeking a highly skilled Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Manager for our Storage, Backup, and Virtualisation team. This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership responsibilities to define technology roadmaps, optimize infrastructure, and ensure secure, efficient operations. The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers while acting as the technical authority for storage, backup, and virtualisation platforms supporting critical business applications, driving operational efficiency and cost optimization across on-prem and cloud environments.
What you will do
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers specializing in UCS, storage, backup, and virtualisation technologies.
- Act as the technical SME for storage (Pure Storage, HP), virtualisation (VMware and at least one other platform), and backup solutions (Veritas, ideally Rubrik).
- Define and implement technology roadmaps for storage, backup, and virtualisation services.
- Optimize VMware environments, including VCF and Telco Cloud license utilisation.
- Drive and manage migration of some virtual workloads away from VMware to alternative virtualisation solutions where required, to optimise cost.
- Ensure operational stability, security, and compliance across backup, storage and virtualisation platforms.
- Collaborate with cloud teams to integrate Azure and GCP with on-prem deployments.
- Develop and enforce operating procedures for secure and efficient system management.
- Drive operational efficiency and cost optimization through automation and standardization.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across storage, backup, and virtualisation environments.
- Prepare detailed documentation for operational processes, compliance audits, and technical designs.
- Participate in the Infrastructure Operations on-call rota to provide out-of-hours support for priority incidents.
